Mexico City — President Claudia Sheinbaum announced her government’s intention to ban U.S. Department of Homeland Security advertisements currently airing in Mexico that aim to deter illegal immigration. The ads, featuring Secretary Kristi Noem, warn migrants against entering the U.S. unlawfully, with messages like “We will hunt you down.”
Sheinbaum condemned the campaign as discriminatory and submitted legislative reforms to bar foreign governments from broadcasting political or ideological propaganda within Mexico. The measure is expected to move quickly through Congress, with support from the Senate.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security defended the campaign, claiming it has contributed to a historic drop in border crossings. However, Mexico’s anti-discrimination agency has urged broadcasters to pull the ads, warning that they may incite hostility toward migrants.
Sheinbaum clarified that tourism and cultural ads would remain permitted, but political propaganda—particularly from foreign governments—would be restricted in the interest of national sovereignty.
